Verification is not a green badge attached to a number. It is a chain of evidence: account identity → authorization → metric definition → reporting window → stored snapshot → refresh date.
A practical verification ladder
| Level | Evidence | Best use | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 · Official read-only connection | Creator authorizes platform analytics | Ongoing media kits and campaign reporting | Only fields the platform exposes |
| 2 · Official export | Platform CSV, PDF, or native share | Historical or one-time diligence | Manual refresh and file context |
| 3 · Native screenshot | Visible account, metric, window, and date | Gap filling | Can be cropped, stale, or incomplete |
| 4 · Public profile data | Public counters and content sample | Discovery and triangulation | No private reach or demographics |
| 5 · Creator-entered claim | Typed rate or performance statement | Context only | Not independently source-controlled |
The three platforms do not expose the same evidence
| Platform | Officially useful signals | Important caveat |
|---|---|---|
| Reach, views, interactions, follower and reached-audience demographics for eligible professional accounts | Metric names, periods, eligibility, and privacy availability change; professional account required | |
| TikTok Display API | Authorized identity, profile, and public video metadata | Standard Display API does not provide the full creator-marketplace demographic dataset |
| TikTok One | Creator discovery filters including demographics, performance, and topics | This is a separate official business product with access and eligibility requirements |
| YouTube Analytics | Views, watch time, subscribers, countries, age groups, gender, devices, returning viewers, content types | Some demographic and geography rows are limited by privacy thresholds |
Verify a creator in eight steps
- 1
Confirm identity
Match the authorized account ID, handle, profile URL, and visible creator identity.
- 2
Record the source
Official connection, export, screenshot, public observation, or creator statement.
- 3
Define the metric
Followers, subscribers, views, reach, impressions, watch time, or interactions are not interchangeable.
- 4
Lock the period
Use exact dates or identify rolling 28-day / 30-day scope.
- 5
Check typical content
Review the median and distribution across comparable recent posts.
- 6
Inspect audience fit
Keep platform audiences separate and note privacy-limited rows.
- 7
Look for discontinuities
Explain sudden jumps, deletions, paid boosts, viral outliers, or provider corrections.
- 8
Create a baseline
Save the pre-campaign snapshot before content or media spend begins.
Investigate anomalies without pretending they prove fraud
- ✓
A follower jump without corresponding reach or content event
- ✓
Identical comment patterns across unrelated posts
- ✓
Averages dominated by one viral result
- ✓
Geography that shifts sharply between adjacent reports
- ✓
Engagement calculated with a different denominator than the comparison group
- ✓
Screenshots without account name, dates, or metric labels
- ✓
Combined follower totals presented as unique people
- ✓
Provider counter corrections presented as negative or positive organic growth
An anomaly is a question, not a verdict. Ask for context, compare official windows, and document the explanation. Platform corrections, removed content, paid boosts, privacy thresholds, and changing definitions can all create legitimate discontinuities.
A decision-ready evidence block
Questions worth answering before the deal
What does “verified analytics” mean?
It should mean the number came from a source the creator cannot simply type into the media kit—such as an authorized platform connection or a clearly documented platform export—with its account, date, metric, and reporting window preserved.
Can every platform provide audience demographics through an API?
No. Availability differs by platform, product, account type, app approval, privacy threshold, and creator authorization. TikTok’s standard Display API is not the same as TikTok One partner access.
Why do dashboard numbers sometimes disagree?
Different tools can use rolling versus calendar windows, reach versus impressions, account versus content scope, time zones, privacy thresholds, or refreshed versus cached data. Compare definitions before treating the difference as an error.
How much history should a brand request?
For recurring partnerships, 90 days is a useful minimum and 6–12 months is stronger for seasonality. If only a current snapshot exists, label it honestly and establish a baseline before the campaign.
